Who can get a gold loan in India? Age, occupation, credit score, gold purity, and NRI eligibility — the complete criteria explained.

Gold Loan Eligibility Criteria in India (2026)

Gold Loan Eligibility Criteria

Compared to most loans, gold loan eligibility is refreshingly simple, because the loan is secured against your gold, not your income or credit history. Here's exactly who qualifies, and what a lender actually checks before approving your application.

Minimum Age

Every lender requires you to be at least 18 years old. There's no exception here, since it's tied to legal contract eligibility.

Maximum Age

This is where lenders differ. Some, like Manappuram Finance, don't impose an upper age limit at all. Others cap eligibility anywhere between 65 and 80 years, depending on the scheme. If you're an older borrower, it's worth checking this specific limit with your chosen lender rather than assuming it's universal.

You Must Own the Gold You're Pledging

You need to be the legal owner of the jewellery, coins, or bars you pledge. For inherited jewellery, some lenders may ask for a simple ownership declaration rather than formal legal proof, since gold rarely comes with a paper trail.

Occupation Doesn't Matter

Unlike a personal loan or credit card, a gold loan doesn't care what you do for a living. Salaried employees, self-employed professionals, business owners, farmers, and homemakers are all equally eligible, provided they meet the age and gold-ownership criteria. This is one of the biggest reasons gold loans are popular in both urban and rural India.

Credit Score: Not a Barrier

Most lenders don't check your CIBIL score for a standard gold loan, especially for smaller amounts. Since the gold itself is the security, a low or non-existent credit history isn't disqualifying the way it would be for an unsecured loan.

Income Proof: Only Sometimes Required

For loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, RBI's simplified norms mean most lenders skip income verification entirely. For larger loans, some lenders may ask for basic income proof — salary slips, ITR, or bank statements — as an added layer of assessment, though the loan remains fundamentally secured by the gold rather than your earnings.

Gold Purity Requirements

Most lenders accept gold jewellery and ornaments between 18 and 22 karat purity, and some extend this to 24 karat for gold coins and bars. Gemstones, beads, and other non-gold material set into jewellery are excluded from the valuation, so they don't count toward your loan-eligible weight.

Can NRIs Get a Gold Loan?

This one genuinely varies by lender, so it's worth checking directly rather than assuming either way:

·      Some banks and NBFCs offer NRI-specific gold loan products, usually requiring the gold to be physically located in India, a resident Indian co-applicant, and extra documents like a passport copy and overseas address proof.

·      Others — Manappuram Finance is one example — do not extend gold loans to NRIs at all.

If you're an NRI, confirm this specifically with the lender before planning around it.

Bank vs NBFC: Does Eligibility Differ?

Banks and NBFCs both operate under the same RBI framework, but in practice, NBFCs such as Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance tend to have marginally more flexible eligibility — fewer branch-specific restrictions, a broader acceptance of gold purity ranges, and a stronger presence in semi-urban and rural areas where a nearby bank branch might not exist. Public sector banks may lean slightly more conservative on age limits or documentation for larger loans, in exchange for typically lower interest rates. Neither is "easier" across the board — it depends on your specific profile and loan size.

How to Check Your Eligibility Before Applying

Most banks and NBFCs offer a free gold loan eligibility calculator on their website or app. You enter your gold's approximate weight and purity, and it estimates your eligible loan amount based on current gold rates and the applicable LTV tier — a useful way to gauge what you might qualify for before you visit a branch or start an online application.

Who Isn't Eligible

·      Corporations and businesses as legal entities — gold loans are generally a retail, individual-borrower product, not issued to companies.

·      Applicants pledging gold they don't own or can't establish ownership of.

·      Gold below the accepted purity threshold, typically under 18 karat, at most lenders.

·      Loans intended purely for speculative gold trading — most lenders ask about the intended use during application, even though funds usually aren't monitored after disbursal.

Final Thoughts

If you're an adult Indian resident who owns gold jewellery or coins of reasonable purity, you almost certainly qualify for a gold loan, regardless of your income, occupation, or credit history. The real decision isn't whether you're eligible; it's which lender's rate, LTV, and terms work best for you.
