How the gold rate affects your gold loan

A lender values your gold from its weight and purity, using a benchmark like this one rather than a jeweller's retail price. A gold loan is then a share of that value — the loan-to-value ratio, or LTV. When the rate rises, the same jewellery can support a larger loan; when it falls, a smaller one.

To estimate it yourself, multiply the net weight of your gold in grams by the rate for its purity, then by the LTV. Net weight means the gold alone — stones and other attachments are deducted. Our gold loan calculator does this for you with today's rate.

Gold rate questions

What is the IBJA gold rate?

IBJA is the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. It publishes benchmark rates for gold of each purity — 999, 995, 916, 750 and 585 — that the trade and many lenders refer to. This page shows IBJA's closing rate.

Why is this rate different from my jeweller's price?

The IBJA rate is a benchmark. It does not include GST, making charges or the jeweller's own margin, all of which are added to the price you pay for jewellery. A lender values your gold by reference to the benchmark, not the retail price.

How often is the rate updated?

Once a day, after IBJA publishes its closing rate in the evening. Until then the page shows the previous closing rate and says so at the top, with its date.

What do 24K, 22K and 18K mean?

Karat is how pure the gold is. 24K (999) is about 99.9% gold, 23K (995) about 99.5%, 22K (916) about 91.6%, 18K (750) 75% and 14K (585) 58.5%. Most Indian jewellery is 22K. Check the hallmark on your piece to see its purity.

Which rate is used to work out my gold loan?

Our calculator uses this closing rate for the purity you pick, with a 75% loan-to-value basis, to estimate what your gold can borrow. Each lender then values your gold on its own terms, so the offer you receive can differ from the estimate.
