Gold Loan Basics
What is a gold loan?
A gold loan is a secured loan where you pledge your gold jewellery, coins, or ornaments as collateral to a bank or NBFC in exchange for funds. The loan amount depends on the weight, purity, and current market value of the gold, along with the Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio set by the lender.
How much loan can I get against my gold?
The loan amount is determined by the weight and purity of your gold and the Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio set by the RBI and the lender, which is generally up to 75% of the gold's market value.
Does the weight of my jewellery determine the loan amount?
Not by itself. The lender generally considers the eligible gold content and purity of the jewellery rather than simply using its total jewellery weight.
What is LTV in a gold loan?
LTV stands for Loan-to-Value. It represents the percentage of the assessed value of your pledged gold that a lender is willing to provide as a loan.
Why can two lenders offer different loan amounts for the same gold?
Different lenders may have different LTV limits, valuation methods, eligible gold criteria, and loan schemes. As a result, the loan amount offered against the same jewellery can vary.
What does 916 gold mean?
916 gold refers to gold with a fineness of 916 parts per 1,000, which corresponds to approximately 22-carat gold. This is why 916 is commonly associated with 22K gold.
Gold Loan Rates & LTV
Can I compare gold loan interest rates from different lenders?
Yes. GoldLoanBazaar allows borrowers to compare available lender options, including applicable interest rates and other relevant loan details, so they can make a more informed choice.
Can I choose a lender based on the lowest interest rate?
Interest rate is an important factor, but borrowers should also consider LTV, processing fees, repayment terms, tenure, applicable charges and the specific loan scheme before selecting a lender.
Why should I compare gold loans before applying?
Different lenders can offer different interest rates, LTVs, charges, loan amounts and repayment options. Comparing these factors can help you identify a gold loan option that better suits your requirements.
Why can the gold value shown on GoldLoanBazaar differ from another source?
Gold prices can change during the day, and different sources may use different purity, timing or pricing references. In addition, the lender's final valuation may differ from a displayed benchmark rate.
Does the IBJA rate determine the exact amount I will receive as a gold loan?
No. The IBJA rate is a benchmark and does not by itself determine your final loan amount. The lender will assess the jewellery, including its eligible gold content and purity, and apply its applicable LTV and loan terms.
Application Process
What happens after I apply for a gold loan?
After submitting your application, the selected lender may verify your details, assess your gold jewellery, determine its eligible value, and evaluate your application according to its lending criteria.
What documents do I need for a gold loan?
Far less than for any other loan. You need proof of identity and proof of address - Aadhaar, PAN, passport, voter ID or driving licence - plus a passport-size photograph.
No income proof, no salary slips, no bank statements and no credit check. The gold is the security, so your income and CIBIL score are not part of the decision.
How long does it take to get the money?
Usually a few hours. Gold loans are among the fastest secured loans in India because there is no income verification and no credit appraisal - the valuation of your jewellery is effectively the whole assessment.
In practice: the branch visit and valuation take about 30 to 45 minutes, and disbursal follows the same day for most borrowers.
Can I take a gold loan if I have a low CIBIL score or no credit history?
Yes. A gold loan is fully secured by the jewellery you pledge, so lenders do not decide on the basis of your credit score. Most do not run a credit check at all, and applying does not affect your score.
This makes it one of the few credit options genuinely open to first-time borrowers, the self-employed and anyone rebuilding after a default.
How do I apply for a gold loan through GoldLoanBazaar?
Select a suitable lender and loan option, provide the required details, and proceed through the application flow. The respective lender will then carry out its verification and gold valuation process.
IBJA Gold Rates
What are IBJA gold rates?
IBJA gold rates are benchmark rates published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association for different gold purities. IBJA publishes daily opening (AM) and closing (PM) rates for gold and other precious metals.
Why are IBJA rates important for gold loans?
IBJA rates can serve as a benchmark for valuing gold in lending against jewellery. IBJA states that its rates are used as benchmark rates for lending against jewellery by banks and NBFCs in accordance with applicable RBI notifications.
What is the difference between IBJA AM and PM rates?
IBJA publishes daily opening (AM) and closing (PM) rates. The rates can differ because gold prices can move during the trading day.
Which gold purities are covered under IBJA rates?
IBJA publishes rates for multiple purities, including 999, 995, 916, 750 and 585 gold. The rates are also published for Silver 999.
Does the IBJA gold rate include GST and making charges?
No. IBJA's published gold rates are stated as being exclusive of 3% GST and making charges.
Is the IBJA rate the same as the jewellery shop's selling price?
Not necessarily. IBJA rates are benchmark/reference rates. A jewellery retailer's final price can include factors such as GST, making charges and other applicable costs.
Does GoldLoanBazaar use IBJA rates to calculate my final loan amount?
IBJA rates can be used as a reference for gold valuation, but the final loan amount is determined by the respective lender after assessing the pledged jewellery and applying its applicable LTV, eligibility criteria and scheme terms.
Charges & Repayment
Are there any charges apart from interest?
Typically a processing fee and a valuation charge, both usually small relative to the loan. Some lenders also levy stamp duty where applicable, and a fee if the loan runs past its due date.
What matters is the total cost, not the headline rate - a low advertised rate with a heavy processing fee can cost more than a slightly higher rate with none. Every lender's fees are shown alongside its rate when you compare.
Can I repay my gold loan before the scheduled maturity date?
Many gold loan schemes allow early repayment, but applicable terms or charges can vary by lender and scheme. Check the specific lender's terms before making a repayment.
What happens if I cannot repay on time?
Nothing happens immediately. The lender will contact you, and you can usually pay the outstanding interest to renew the loan for a fresh tenure.
If the loan stays unpaid, the lender is required to send you notice before auctioning the pledged gold - the RBI mandates prior intimation and a transparent auction process. If the auction realises more than you owe, the surplus is returned to you. Talking to the lender early almost always leaves you with better options than staying silent.
