Gold Loan Charges & Fees: The Complete Breakdown

Gold Loan Charges & Fees

The interest rate gets all the attention, but it's rarely the whole cost of a gold loan. Processing fees, foreclosure charges, and a handful of smaller costs can add up — and because they're not always advertised as prominently as the interest rate, they're where borrowers most often get caught off guard. Here's the complete breakdown.

Processing Fee

This is a one-time charge collected at the time your loan is sanctioned, covering the cost of evaluation, verification, and loan setup. Lenders typically use one of two models:

·      Percentage-based — commonly 0.25% to 1% of the sanctioned loan amount, occasionally up to 2% at some lenders. The larger your loan, the larger this fee in absolute terms.

·      Flat fee — a fixed amount regardless of loan size, more common for smaller-ticket loans. Some NBFCs charge a nominal flat fee, sometimes as low as ₹25 plus applicable tax, specifically to keep small loans genuinely cost-effective.

Worth knowing: Udyam-registered micro and small enterprises are exempt from processing fees on gold loans up to ₹5 lakh at some banks, provided the registration certificate is submitted before disbursal — a meaningful saving if you're borrowing for a small business.

Foreclosure / Prepayment Charges

If you repay your gold loan before the end of the agreed tenure, some lenders charge a foreclosure or prepayment fee, typically up to 2% of the outstanding loan amount. This isn't universal — several lenders waive it entirely, or only after a minimum lock-in period (commonly around one month from disbursal), after which you can close the loan penalty-free.

For fixed-rate gold loans up to ₹50 lakh taken by Micro and Small Enterprises, some banks waive foreclosure charges entirely when the loan is closed using the business's own funds — worth checking if this applies to you.

Late Payment / Penal Charges

If you miss an EMI or fail to repay by the end of the tenure, expect a penal charge on the overdue or outstanding amount — commonly cited examples run around 2% per annum above the regular rate, applied specifically to the amount and period you're in default on. This is separate from, and in addition to, your regular interest.

Valuation and Appraisal Charges

Some lenders bundle the cost of gold appraisal into the processing fee, while others list it as a small separate charge. Either way, this typically isn't a major cost, but it's worth asking about upfront so it doesn't feel like a surprise line item at disbursal.

Stamp Duty

Gold loan agreements, like most loan contracts, are subject to stamp duty for legal enforceability. Since stamp duty is a state subject in India, the exact amount varies depending on which state you're borrowing in, and is usually a small percentage of the loan amount or a nominal flat charge.

Other Possible Charges

A few less common but worth-knowing costs:

·      Gold storage or safekeeping charges — rare for standard loans, but some schemes may apply a small fee for extended storage.

·      Legal or collection notice charges — costs the lender incurs if they need to send formal reminders about overdue payments.

·      Auction-related charges — if a loan goes into serious default and the pledged gold is auctioned under RBI's defined process, associated costs are typically deducted from the auction proceeds before any surplus is returned to you.

GST on Charges

Processing fees and most other charges attract GST at the applicable rate, added on top of the quoted fee. When comparing lenders, check whether the number you're seeing is inclusive or exclusive of GST, since this can make an otherwise-identical fee look different across two offers.

How to Minimize What You Pay in Charges

·      Ask for the complete fee schedule upfront, not just the interest rate, before signing anything.

·      Check the foreclosure lock-in period if you expect to repay early — timing your closure just past the lock-in can save you the fee entirely.

·      Compare flat-fee versus percentage-based processing charges relative to your loan size — flat fees favor larger loans, percentage fees favor smaller ones.

·      Ask if your loan qualifies for any waivers, such as the MSE-specific exemptions some banks offer.

Final Thoughts

A gold loan's true cost is interest plus every fee layered on top of it, not the headline rate alone. Two lenders quoting the same interest rate can end up costing meaningfully different amounts once processing fees, foreclosure charges, and penal terms are factored in — so it's worth asking for the full fee schedule before you compare, not after.
